Friendly - Summerston
Ashfield 3 AC Milanda 1 (HT 1-0)
Scorer - Reid
As the free team in a three-club League Cup section on Saturday, Milanda accepted Ashfield’s invitation to play a friendly at Summerston. Unfortunately, only eight players turned up and a team had to be cobbled together using Ashfield subs and passing strangers. Despite all the problems, it turned out an entertaining game that was closer than the scoreline suggests.
Andy Thomson, Gerry Evans and Gary Di Folco coped well with a lively Ashfield attack in the first period.
Milanda were just one behind at the break and the goal was a little unfortunate, the stand-in keeper being hesitant to come off his line and snuff out the danger due to a lack of understanding between him and defenders he had just met.
Ashfield scored again early in the second period but Milanda soon halved the deficit. Martin Coyle, who had answered an SOS to get the boots back on, fired in a shot that beat the keeper and struck a post, allowing the alert Mark Reid to pounce and net the loose ball. With Paul Murray and Colin Kelly continually probing for openings, Milanda had other chances and looked capable of getting back on terms.
However, an excellent free-kick goal near the end sealed victory for the home side.Despite the result and off-field problems, it was a good workout for those who turned up and they all put in a great shift. A special mention must be given to Milanda legend Coyle who looked quite at home after a long break from football at this level and hopefully we'll see more of him in the red and black in the weeks to come.
On the down side, the returning Kevin Grehan picked up another ankle injury early in the match and had to go off. Andy Thomson did likewise in the second half after suffering a twisted knee.
It never rains but it pours.
Next up is the talented Auchinairn Star at Stepford in the opening league match.
